Iran has been in the U.S. crosshairs since 1979, when their beloved Shah, who partied with Western elites while torturing dissidents at home, was overthrown. Didn't matter who was responsible. The status quo was undermined and, in the wake of Vietnam, could not be tolerated.
Taking U.S. hostages didn't help New Iran's image, and there was no true end game there. But for a brief time, it was a major Fuck You to the U.S., UK, and Israel which, however bracing, helped set the present tone.
Generations of Americans have been indoctrinated in anti-Iran hatred. I can't think of another country that has been accused of countless crimes, and yet never invaded another state, has been open to nuclear inspections, and seemingly willing to work with international institutions. But somehow, Iran is a rogue pirate ship.
This is beyond imperial projection. It's almost a form of mental illness, especially when you consider Israel's ongoing genocidal behavior. But that's the point. Stir up the shit, sell endless war as the solution, rake in the political and financial windfall.
Fortunately, there are scores of Americans who oppose any war with Iran, primarily if it requires U.S. troops. I don't know how deeply this opposition runs, or if it has any organizational framework. But it's something. And for now, good enough.
