Resist This
Revolutions rarely succeed. And when they do, they’re usually deformed.
I watched One Battle After Another twice, and it depressed the fuck out of me. It was too close to the bone.
I wanted to change things. I gave up a comedy career to chase this. I’m serious. I was offered a job to write for a top 10 sitcom. Of course it was shit, and I wanted nothing to do with it. The guy who set this up didn’t speak to me for years, until he needed material for his Tonight Show debut, which I provided. My material received laughs and applause. He gave me a generous bonus, and that was it for showbiz. At least for awhile.
Soon after, I met Jeff Cohen. He changed my life. I joined Fairness And Accuracy In Reporting (FAIR) in 1986, for no money, but I didn’t care. I sat on the floor and clipped newspapers. I was happy to do it.
Jeff recently asked me if what we did was worth it. I said that it was. We changed minds. We gave people a different perspective. I’d like to think that we gave them some hope. I saw it up close. I’m proud to have been be a part of it. It was an amazing group of people.
But the corporate state is relentless. Stalin would’ve been envious. Trump lacks Stalin’s authoritarian efficiency, but he’s doing his clumsy, criminal best. Trump has his fans; I’m related to some of them. Talking to them is meaningless. They love the guy. And I thought Reagan’s cult was bad.
There’s no serious political opposition to this. The Democrats are useless, and no third party has the money nor clout to challenge anything. In short, we are in a world of shit. Indulge your hobbies. Love your family. Root for your favorite sports team. Rewatch your favorite movies. Cultural distraction is the only resistance left. Enjoy it while you can.
